Chinese New Year's celebration

Thank you Mrs. Lassiter for the Chinese candy treat to celebrate Chinese New Year. Here is some information that Mrs. Lassiter passed on to us:

There is a Chinese New Year celebration this Saturday (1/28) at Exposition Center, NC State Fairground. It is the year of Dragon. The advanced ticket is $5 (on that day is $8). The kids age 6 and under are free. Since your class did the Chinese New Year theme for the holiday rotation, I thought you may be interested in the event as well as your students. There will be lion dance, dragon dance, folk dances, arts and crafts, food, etc. You can find more information at http://www.nctacas.org/.

Today is the 92nd day of kindergarten!  We would like each child to create a collection of 100 things to bring into class next week. Have your child count out 10 groups of 10 items. Small items like : cotton balls, toothpicks, buttons, marshmellows and  cereal can be glued onto foam board to display. Be creative and have your child help with numbering their items on the display board. Send in your collections as soon as they're ready. Warning, make sure glue is dried before sending the collections in. We will celebrate the 100th day on Monday, February 6th. This is because we will have some kindergarten teachers out on Friday and want classes to celebrate on the same day.

We are so excited to announce that Mrs. Depo is expecting a baby at the end of March! Congratulatings Mrs. Depo! Can't wait to find out if it's a girl or boy! Parents, we haven't told the class yet. This is our first announcement.

I spent my holiday enjoying my family, including my granddaughter Mackenzie and time with my friends and church activities. I finished a quilt for my sister and one for my friend's soon to be granddaughter. Coming home this week I could tell how much my dog, Bella, missed having her people home full time! I hope all of you enjoyed spending time with your family and friends.

Mackenzie is looking forward to meeting her new brother in April, so is Nana.

We still need a lot of volunteers to help with holiday rotations on Dec. 12-Dec. 19th. There is a new spread sheet sign up link. If you volunteer already on the previous one, I transferred you to your selected day. On the spread sheet our class volunteers are in the red section for each day. We need 5-6 volunteers in all six classrooms. If you see that the red sections are full or if you'd just like to help Mrs. Depo and I with Chinese New Year activities, you can sign up under my name on any of the six days.

There is a second page on the needed supplies. These are supplies that our class will need when they rotate to the other classrooms. In these rooms they will do activities on :Hanukkah, Diwali, Los Posadas, Christmas in Germany and Sweden. While outside this weekend, please be on the lookout for pinecones. We need 22 pinecones to make bird feeders in one of the rotations.

Holiday Rotations

During the six school days starting Dec 12th, kindergarten will be hosting holiday rotations. Each classroom will specialize in presenting holiday traditions from a country or culture. The six kindergarten classes will rotate, spending one morning in each classroom learning about the holiday traditions. Our class will start in our own classroom on Dec. 12th learning about China and the tradition of Chinese New Year tradition. For the next 5 days our class will rotate through the other five kindergarten classrooms.

Each class will need to provide 5-6 volunteers each day to assist in the classroom that hosts their class. Centers will be from 8:45-10:30 each day. It would help if volunteers can be in place by 8:30 to get instructions from the teachers. Many volunteers are needed to make this learning activity a success. We can use all adult family members. Moms, dads, grandparents can all sign up on different days to help give us the volunteer coverage needed.

Our class is responsible to provide the supplies needed to present Chinese New Years rotation. We have 132 students in the six kindergarten classes. In this rotation we will: act out a story called "Buddha called the animals", make a lion dancer mask, make a New Year's zodiac calendar hat, taste lomein noodles for long life, read a guided reading book on New Years, get a fortune cookie, get a lucky red envelope with a chocolate coin, get a pair of chop sticks, get a chinese placemat with the zodiac calendar animals on it, learn some things about China from our bulletin board and see some Chinese decorations and signs and hear them read in Chinese.

Nov. 16th

Joyner's International Parade- Tomorrow, Nov 17th at 9:30

Joyner will have our annual international parade representing different countries and cultures tomorrow at 9:30. The parade will go through the school hallways. If you would like to come see the parade you need to find a spot along the hallway before 9:30.

Rainbow Day- Friday, Nov 18th

Wear a colorful collection of colors or your favorite color to celebrate the end of our color celebrations. The Howard's are providing a rainbow snack.

Family Pow- Wow

Monday at 12:15 in our classroom

All families are invited to our Family Pow-Wow to celebrate with us. We have prepared costumes and will sing some songs for you. Then families with work with their child to make a Thanksgiving craft and snack. We look forward to seeing you then!

Mrs. Hoover's leaving

Mrs. Hoover, one of our kindergarten teachers, is leaving Joyner. She has accepted a technology position at Wiley Elementary. Her last day will be Tuesday, Nov. 22nd. This week we are collecting special notes, cards, photos or gifts to give to Mrs. Hoover before she leaves. If your family has any items for her please send them in by Friday, Nov 18th. The items will be compiled and presented to Mrs. Hoover next week.

I enjoyed talking with all of your during parent conferences. After Thanksgiving we will begin sending home the "Go-Read" orange bags. They will come home 2-3 times a week. Please help your child have a consistent routine of where and when they use the bags and return them to school the next day with the book, journal and sign in sheet in the bag. These bags should be carried in their bookbags.
Your child will also start bringing home the poems/books they have made and practiced on. These are to be kept at home in a special box or basket that they can reread periodically.
