The kids were so excited and relatives you did a great job at keeping the secret! I wish I had a video of them listening to the story "The Relatives Came" and then Mrs. Drake discovering the relatives at the door. Just Precious!

Attention Parents!
Shhh!! This is a secret!
We would like to invite you to a special reading treat for you and your child on Tues., Sept 28 at 12:30 (will need to sign in at the office and be quietly outside our room at 12:30).
We will be sharing a book in class called The Relatives Came and we are hoping all our parents and grandparents will come to surprise the children and read a favorite book with them.
Please bring a towel, blanket, or quilt and your favorite children’s story. We want this to be a surprise, so please try to stay out of the Kindergarten Hall prior to 12:00 as we will be making our way back from lunch & recess. After 12:30pm, please wait in the hall outside our room until we announce your presence. This would be a GREAT time for you to meet some of the other parents in our room as well! Please bring cookies to share with the students and other parents. We can’t wait to see you!!

Shh!! It's a Surprise!!
Kindergarten is studying our IB unit "Free to Be you and Me". We are learning about ourselves, our families and each other. On Tuesday, Sept 28th we will be reading the book "The Relatives Came" by Cynthia Rylant.
We want to time the reading so that we'll finish the book at 12:30.
That's when Mrs. Drake's and Mrs. Piner's classes relatives are invited to be waiting in the hallway outside our rooms. (other kindergarten classes will do this on Wed. Sept 29th)
When the teacher finishes reading the story she will say she hears something in the hall and will open the door and discover our relatives came!
Relatives of our class are invited to come and bring a store bought refreshment to share- cookies, lemonade. If a parent would volunteer to bring cups and napkins, please let me know.
We will share refreshments and visit with each other until 1:15 when we need to pack bookbags and get ready for specials/spanish.
Remember this is a secret!!! Do not tell your child about this plan!! I look forward to meeting our relatives on Tuesday, Sept 28th at 12:30. Please wait quietly in the hallway, out of sight of our door.

Welcome 2010-11 Chickadees
I am so excited to be at Joyner for my sixth year! My first class will be graduating to middle school this year. That's so hard to believe! Let me tell you about myself. I love teaching! Kindergarten is such a wonderful place to learn. In my class I use a lot of children's literature to teach all subjects and believe in hands on learning activities. The addition of the Promethean Board and United streaming have added rich resources to our curriculum. This year we have a new math curriculum called Math Expressions and a new handwriting curriculum called Handwriting without Tears. I teach reading using guided reading groups and will be adding some reading workshop time. The children will have a writing journal and some writing workshop lessons.
In August, my husband and I celebrated our 32nd anniversary. We have two sons. Our eldest, Travis, is a paramedic for Apex. He is married to Michelle and just had our first grandchild, Mackenzie. Our son Joey works for Wake Med-Cary and blessed us last week with a grand-dog named Bella.
I enjoy quilting, making prayer shawls for my church, being a Stephen Minister and reading. This summer I was lucky enough to spend July in the mountains. My sewing machine went with me and I finished four quilts. We enjoy escaping to the mountains whenever we can!
We've had a busy first few days. The children are learning routines and procedures. They completed a beginning of the year portrait. They did a wonderful job of sharing their "Me Bags" and sharing what they'd like to learn in kindergarten. We have a delightful group of children! It will be fun making lots of memories together this year.
